Computer Literacy Syllabus

Course Description:

These training courses are designed to develop students’ overall understanding of computers and to enhance their technical skills in both basic computer functions and in the use of various types of software. By providing technical instruction and several practice opportunities, these courses provide a strong foundation in basic computer literacy. After completing these courses, you will be able to recognize computer hardware and use Windows operating systems. Students also will learn to use various software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software), which are based on Microsoft Office 2007/2010 unless otherwise noted.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • identify various computer hardware components
  • explain how computer networks operate
  • describe the considerations of computer and Internet security
  • accurately use computer terminology
  • demonstrate basic computer skills
  • develop an efficient file management system
  • briefly describe how the Internet works
  • use the Internet effectively to share files, communicate, and conduct research
  • use word processing software to create a document
  • use spreadsheet software to create a spreadsheet
  • use presentation software to create a presentation
  • use image-editing software to create a graphic
  • use image-editing software to make basic visual improvements to an image

NOTE: The suggested time frame for the completion of each unit is just an estimate. This syllabus is based on a 15-weeks training. You may work on each unit at your own pace, but keep in mind that you must finish the entire course within the time specified by your school administration.

Unit 1—Understanding Computers (Weeks 1 through 2)

Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • define technology and its role in today’s society
  • identify and describe the purposes of various computer hardware components
  • explain the role of operating systems
    describe the purposes of databases
  • explain how databases work
  • describe how computer networks are organized and how they work
